Questions answered

Can a helicopter fly over my house?
Yes, if the flight is lawful. No action for trespass or nuisance lies 'by reason only of' flight at a reasonable height provided the Air Navigation Order is complied with, and noise is not a statutory nuisance. legislation.gov.uk
How low can a helicopter legally fly?
Under VFR, not below 1,000 ft above the highest obstacle within 600 m over congested areas, or 500 ft above ground or water elsewhere, except for take-off and landing or with CAA permission (CAA breach page also gives 500 ft from persons, vessels, vehicles and structures). Police, HEMS and some manoeuvring helicopters have CAA exemptions. legislation.gov.uk
Can I stop helicopters landing near me?
Not generally. Councils and the CAA have no noise power; the CAA cannot restrict compliant flights. Landing in a congested area is barred except at an aerodrome or CAA-permitted site; landing on your own land without permission is trespass (common law, drafting note). Planning limits (e.g. 28-day temporary use) and the owner's permission apply to landing sites. legislation.gov.uk
Who do I complain to?
For helicopters using Battersea: London Heliport (form or 020 7228 0181). For suspected low flying: CAA report form ABL. For noise generally: CAA form FCS 1521 which logs and refers. Military: MoD low-flying team. londonheliport.co.uk
Why do helicopters follow the Thames?
London's prescribed helicopter routes follow the river and open land; flights in the London and London City control zones need ATC clearance. The heliport also asks pilots to offset 15 degrees and turn over the river. A search summary says the routes date from the 1970s and were designed for safety rather than noise (2013 government decision); not read directly. caa.co.uk
Is there a night curfew?
At London Heliport no flights between 2300 and 0700 except emergencies. No London-wide curfew found; police and air ambulance may fly 24 hours. londonheliport.co.uk
Why is a helicopter circling over my area?
The heliport says long circling is likely a police or air ambulance helicopter, not a heliport departure; these may be exempt from some height rules. londonheliport.co.uk
Can I claim if something falls from a helicopter or it damages my property?
Yes: material loss or damage to persons or property from an aircraft in flight, taking off or landing (or things falling from it) is recoverable without proof of negligence, unless you contributed through your own negligence. legislation.gov.uk
Can helicopters land in Hyde Park or other Royal Parks?
Not without the Secretary of State's written permission, except in an emergency. legislation.gov.uk
What happens after a helicopter accident in London?
The AAIB investigates under the Civil Aviation (Investigation of Air Accidents and Incidents) Regulations 2018 and publishes a report with safety recommendations; the Vauxhall 2013 report gave ten. Reportable occurrences go to the CAA within 72 hours. gov.uk
